Francis Ford Coppola, cinco vezes ganhador do Oscar e diretor de obras-primas como "O poderoso chefão" e "Apocalypse now", conquistou há muito tempo seu lugar definitivo de mestre entre roteiristas e cineastas. Nos últimos anos, no entanto, também ganhou reputação como vinicultor californiano de primeiro nível.

Agora ele está de volta aos cinemas com seu primeiro filme em oito anos, "Youth without youth", em que Tim Roth faz um homem que, misteriosamente, rejuvenesce depois de ser atingido por um raio.

Na entrevista a seguir, Coppola falou sobre o novo filme e seu amor pelo vinho e as mulheres.

O senhor se deu melhor com o vinho que com o cinema, financeiramente falando?
Coppola - Não há comparação possível. Trabalhar com vinho é como ter um sucesso de US$ 100 milhões de bilheteria todos os anos. O negócio de vinho é um negócio de fato. O negócio do cinema não é negócio. É uma coisa muito desequilibrada, em que você faz o trabalho todo, enquanto o dinheiro é todo colocado num recipiente chamado distribuição, de onde vai pingando aos pouquinhos. Quando chega às pessoas que de fato fizeram o filme, sobrou muito pouco. Não é possível enriquecer realmente fazendo cinema hoje em dia.

O que o senhor faz para se divertir?
Coppola - Adoro ler. Tenho crianças lindas cuja companhia eu hoje curto muito. Tenho uma neta linda de 21 anos e uma de um, então há uma discrepância grande. Estou casado com a mesma mulher há 45 anos.

Como conseguiu?
Coppola - Provavelmente porque carreguei minha família comigo cada vez que fui filmar em locações distantes. Eu não queria me afastar de meus filhos, mesmo que para isso fosse preciso tirá-los da escola.

Qual é seu maior vício?
Coppola - Acho que é comer. Eu sei que isso me faz mal e que estou acima do peso, mas adoro comer e tomar vinho, embora eu não beba muito. Meu trabalho não me permite o tipo de vida em que eu possa andar por aí com muitas garotas, embora eu sempre tenha sido louco por mulheres, durante toda minha vida. Mas hoje elas ocupam um lugar mais baixo na lista de minhas prioridades.

Até onde elas caíram em sua lista?
Coppola - Bom, antigamente elas ocupavam o lugar número um entre as coisas mais belas da vida. Depois esse lugar foi tomado pelas crianças, e assim por diante. Hoje, elas ocupam o lugar número quatro, mais ou menos. As mulheres são um sonho. São tão interessantes!

É verdade que o senhor financiou "Youth Without Youth" com sua produção de vinhos?
Coppola - Sim, financiei o filme com meu próprio dinheiro, e isso só foi possível porque possuo uma grande empresa de vinhos.

Também é verdade que pagou algumas pessoas com vinhos?
Coppola -Sim, foi assim que fizemos. Pelo menos eu dei a elas alguma coisa de valor. Hoje em dia os dólares já não valem grande coisa.

It is true that you financed "Youth Without Youth" with its production of wine?
Coppola - Yes, financing the film with my own money, and it was only possible because I have a large wine company.

Coppola-Yes, that was how it did. At least I gave them something of value. Today, the dollars are no longer worth much.
